Katie Higgins was the first girl Jake ever loved. They spent one summer together at Lake Fisher when they were sixteen, and then he never saw her again. Now, eighteen years later, Jake finds himself back at Lake Fisher, and so does Katie. However, her last name is no longer Higgins, as she is now a married woman with three children and another on the way.
When Katie shows up at Lake Fisher with her family, danger seems to follow her there. Jake could choose to leave and go home, or he could stay and confront the situation. But what he wants most of all is to take care of Katie. If he can focus on her, maybe he won't have to face his own problems, which include a lost job and his father's recent stroke.
As for Katie, the moment she lays eyes on Jake, she feels safer than she has in a very long time. Memories of their past come flooding back – their first kiss, their first boyfriend, and their first love. That old spark is still there, but they both know they can't act on it. Their story started eighteen years ago, and they have both since built lives with other people.
Katie is willing to tell Jake about her life, but she can't share it with him. Ever. They can be friends and spend another summer together, but that's all. Jake, on the other hand, is willing to open up about his own struggles, but Katie can't reciprocate.
The situation is complicated, but there's an undeniable connection between them. They both feel drawn to each other, even after all these years. The clear, cool water of Lake Fisher triggers memories of their past, and they find themselves wanting to recapture that carefree summer they once shared.
However, the reality is that their lives have moved on, and they both have responsibilities and commitments to others. They can't simply pick up where they left off, no matter how strong the pull is. Instead, they must navigate the delicate balance of being friends and finding a way to support each other, while also respecting the boundaries of their current lives.
It's a bittersweet reunion, filled with nostalgia and the weight of the years that have passed. But as they spend time together again at Lake Fisher, they both can't help but wonder what might have been, and whether there's a way to recapture the magic of that long-ago summer.
